There are so many cities in China, so why study in Beijing?

Beijing is the ultimate place to learn standard Mandarin Chinese. Mandarin as spoken in Beijing is considered to be the standard for the People's Republic of China.

Other cities such as Shanghai, Qingdao, Kunming, Guangzhou, Dalian, Nanjing, etc., might teach standard Mandarin in the classroom, but the learning environment outside of class is certainly not optimal. Many people in other cities speak dialects that are not even comprehensible to other Chinese people and do not even resemble Standard Chinese. Perhaps the dialects even more detrimental to your Chinese language studies are those that somewhat resemble Standard Chinese. When outside of class it is difficult to differentiate between terms that are okay to learn and use from those that constitute some form of dialect.
