Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU)
The Beijing Language and Culture University is one of the most famous universities for foreign
language acquisition in China. The BLCU Chinese language programmes are considered among the best in China
and the institution itself has been teaching Chinese to foreigners for 40 years.
BLCU has several different courses varying in duration and intensity, and they also hold a number of vocational
programmes taught in Chinese for those interested. Please see the descriptions and charts below for dates
and prices of all programmes. You can view the University's website by clicking
HERE,
although it is rather slow. Please note that for both long and short term courses,
the application fee is 50 US dollars per person per course. The tuition fees include the necessary course texts,
as well as several sightseeing trips in Beijing,
usually a trip to the Great Wall of China and a Peking Opera or Acrobatic Show.
We encourage students to apply early for courses as they tend to fill up before the actual application deadline.
**The tuition fees listed below are university tuition costs only. The following fees cover tuition and course materials.
They do not include our service fee or any other fees such as food or accommodation, etc.
*Certificates are awarded by the university upon successful completion of all courses. Degree programmes for Chinese Language
(B.A., M.A., and Ph.D) are offered as well and we can assist with these upon request.

Short Term Chinese Language Courses (not over one semester)

Short term courses are intensive and effective. They are broken up into Regular Courses and Intensive Courses.
The difference between the two is that the intensive courses are 30 class hours per week (typically 6 hours of class per day)
while the regular courses are 20 class hours per week (typically 4 hours of class per day).
The intensive courses are offered for a minimum of one semester. All courses focus comprehensively on the Chinese language;
they all emphasise speaking, listening, reading and writing. Courses are taught, in most cases, almost completely in Chinese.
Homework is assigned and there are regular quizzes and examinations. Classes are limited to about 20 students,
but usually have less. Students are placed in classes based on a placement test or teacher examination
after arriving in Beijing. This placement process constitutes the first day of class.
I. Regular Courses (20 hours of class per week)
By far the most popular, the regular courses are Monday through Friday 20 hours per week, typically daily from 8AM to 12PM.
Below are the courses available and durations.
Keep in mind that several courses can be combined if you desire a longer programme than is listed.
II. Intensive Courses (30 hours of class per week)
The intensive courses are set up basically the same as the regular courses, but with 10 extra hours of study per week (very often 8am to 12pm and then 2pm to 4pm, Monday through Friday). These courses are only for the most serious and diligent workers as the workload is quite heavy and the pace very fast. The extra hours are used to cover new material, not for review. Before signing up for these courses, just remember that a semester is a long time to have 6 hours of class per day 5 days a week. Note that this intensive programme is US$ 900 more expensive than the regular semester-long course.
Long Term Chinese Language Courses (1 to 2 Academic Years)
Long term Chinese language courses can be for 1 to 2 years, depending on how long you wish to study. The long term courses still focus on all aspects of Chinese: speaking, listening, reading, and writing; however, these courses are paced and balanced to be slightly more comprehensive over the longer period of time. These courses are also 20 class hours per week, with varying class times. Our personal advice is always for students to think carefully before paying for one academic year in China, just in case they change their minds and want to leave after one semester. If you are not sure whether or not you want to study for one full year, you can always first sign up for one semester, and then provided you like it and apply for the next semester before the application deadline, then attend another semester. Keep in mind that if you do this the types of certification you will receive are different--you will be given two short term programme certificates as opposed to the one year long term programme certificate you would receive if you attended the year long programme. Whether or not this really matters is up to the individual student.
