Accommodation Options

Housing options at Beida consist of on campus and off campus locations. All options are approved residences for foreign students. Unfortunately, housing at Beida tends to be both expensive and competitive. Room price varies dramatically depending on the facilities provided and condition of the room, and we cannot always guarantee a particular room for students. The university reserves the right to final allocation. This is a problem for many students on a budget because there is a chance that they will end up with a room that is more expensive than they had planned. For this reason we also include the off campus locations below, which can be booked in advance. While they are a bit farther from campus, they are still reasonably near and in a very fun area close to the Beijing Language and Culture University and Tsinghua University. The off campus locations we have listed are a 10 minute taxi ride (about 1.5 USdollars one way) from the Beijing University campus or about a 15 minute bike ride. Public bus routes also run from a nearby stop to campus for 1 RMB (about 0.12 USD). If you have other accommodation requests, please don't hesitate to CONTACT US. If you wish to first view what there is to do outside of class at Beijing University, click HERE or scroll down the page.

If you also want an idea of an overall budget for studying at Beijing University, we have some sample budgets prepared. To view these click HERE to open them in a new window.

On Campus Accommodation

Dormitories
Dormitories at Bei Da range in price from about 4 to 25 US dollars per day. The price depends on whether or not the room is single or shared, the bathroom and shower are located in the room or in the hallway for common use, and on what facilities are available in the room (telephone, television, small refrigerator, air conditioning, washing facilities and cooking facilities). The difference between rooms at Beijing University is rather large--they are either really cheap (yet on average still more expensive than other universities) and not very nice or really expensive and relatively nice for Chinese dormitories. Most students live in the Shaoyuan complex for foreign students. This is relatively centrally located in campus and close to almost everything. Some students choose to live in Bei Zhao, which is farther away but close to the famous Wei Ming Hu "Lake Without a Name," but these rooms are traditionally reserved for long term foreign students and researchers. Single rooms are available, but difficult to get because they are few in number. Doubles and triples are both available, but the majority are double rooms (i.e. two people sharing a room).

The following chart is designed to provide an idea of cost versus facilities included at Beijing University dormitories. Prices are subject to change by the university and slight variation due to exchange rates. Discounts are sometimes available for long term students. Again, keep in mind that if you decide to live on campus we will not likely be able to choose your accommodation based on price, it will depend on what the university has available and they usually don't decide until just before the programme begins. The term "serviced room" below refers to the making of beds and the serving of a thermos of boiling water (potable) every weekday by dorm staff. All dormitories are centrally heated in the winter.

Off Campus Accommodation

Xi Jiao Hotel
The Xi Jiao is located about an 8 to 10 minute taxi ride (1.5USD by taxi or a 12 to 15 minute bicycle ride) from the Beida campus. It is the nicest accommodation facility in its area. The Xi Jiao houses a business centre, swimming pool, karaoke hall, sauna, bowling alley, billiards hall, internet cafe, video games centre and several bars and restaurants. The costs for these venues are extra. It is more like a community complex than a hotel, with just about everything one could need.

Students residing at Xi Jiao Hotel for 30 days or more receive free broadband internet access, a membership to the Xi Jiao Hotel 25m swimming pool, free Chinese/Western breakfast buffet, and free local phone calls. These benefits are not available for shorter stays.

Please notice in the chart below that double and single rooms are the same price. If you wish to share a double room with a friend then you can split the room price between you. If you are coming by yourself but wish to share a double with another student, you can indicate this on your application. Provided we have another student of the same sex who has the same request, the two of you can be roommates. To obtain the discounted prices in the chart below fees for the entire length of stay must be paid up front in one lump sum. All prices are per room per day, and are subject to change and slight variation due to exchange rates. Want to convert RMB to any currency? CLICK HERE!

Fun Outside of Class
There are many fun things to do outside of class when you are not studying. In addition to seeing the sights of Beijing, such as the Great Wall of China, Temple of Heaven, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Beihai Park, etc., there are plenty of venues for fun close to and on campus. There are several tennis, basketball and soccer courts on campus for student use with reasonable fees, and an outdoor running track free for student use. The WuSi sports arena contains a 25m swimming pool that is only 12 RMB per hour (about US$ 1.50) and it includes the use of a sauna. There is also a gym on campus but the equipment is very basic and primitive. If you are interested in gym facilities and place to work out, there is a great private gym located not too far away in the recreation centre on the Beijing Language and Culture University Campus called Fusion Vitality Centre with memberships from 45 RMB (about 5.5 US Dollars) per day to 350 RMB (about 43 US Dollars) per month for full use of facilities. Access Mandarin Students are exempt from the usual membership startup fee! For more information about the gym and prices, CLICK HERE.

Do you like to use the internet and keep in touch with friends by email? While not as numerous as in the past, there are still public email cafes where you can check email only a short walk or bus/taxi ride from campus. Internet cafes usually charge from 0.50 USD to 1USD per hour. Cheap! Beijing University is also right next to China's silicon valley, Zhong Guan Cun. Here you can find just about any computer game, software or component that you might need/want. If you have a laptop computer, internet access is available in all accommodation options.

For those students who are avid book readers, English books as well as other languages are widely available and inexpensive. The bookstores on and near campus have many excellent books about China and for supplementing your Chinese studies. The foreign bookstores in Xidan and Wangfujing in dowtown Beijing have a wide selection of books and resources in English and other languages. Don't forget that Bei Da has one of the biggest libraries in Asia!

The Beida campus houses 7 student dining cafeterias, with one especially suited to foreigners' tastes right in Shao Yuan where the majority of foreigner students live. There are also quite a few small restaurants just off campus with reasonably priced food. Estimate about 6 US dollars per day (5 if you eat light) for food. For nightlife, there are several pubs just a walk away. Transportation is convenient and the subway is only a short bus or taxi ride away.

Are you interested in pursuing a career in China? There are a number of email lists and information lines available so that you can stay informed of important talks, seminars, cocktail hours, associations, and other events for networking and meeting colleagues in Beijing while you are studying here. Our staff is here to provide you with this information if you are interested.
