Founded in 1898, Beijing University (often called/spelled Peking University, or PKU, due to a different romanisation system) is probably the most prestigious university in China. Often referred to as Peking University, it boasts one of the largest of Asia's libraries with over 5.35 million books, including more than 1.5 million volumes of ancient works. The campus is one of the most beautiful in Beijing with a park-like setting of ancient architecture, trees and Wei Ming Hu, the Lake Without a Name. Many well-known Chinese and foreigners have obtained degrees from Beijing University, and many Chinese undergraduates aspire to attend Beida, knowing that the competition to gain enrolment is fierce.

The drawback to Beijing University is the lack of cheaper convenient housing options. Dormitories are rather expensive for foreign students as are the closest off campus housing options. If students choose to live about a 10 minute commute from campus then the accommodation options become more numerous and more affordable. To view housing options for Beida, please click HERE.

Bei Da offers a limited number of short term Chinese courses. Please see the description and chart below for dates and prices of all programmes. We can also provide assistance for students applying to undergraduate degree programmes at Beida. Please scroll down for more info or click HERE. All courses at Beijing University tend to fill up quickly, often before the application deadline, so please apply early! You can view the University's website by clicking HERE. Please note that for all short term courses listed below the application fee is 50 US dollars per person per course. Tuition for these short term programmes includes class texts as well as several excursions, typically to these places/events: Forbidden City, Great Wall, Temple of Heaven, Peking Opera and Acrobatic Show.

Beijing University also arranges a number of short trips (usually a weekend) for the semester students. These are extra cost but usually priced very reasonably. Past excursions have ventured to Datong, Tai Yuan, Chengde, Mount Tai, Qufu and Inner Mongolia. In addition, extracurricular courses are offered for students to sign up at extra cost (also very minimal). These include subjects such as Tai Ji Quan, Wushu, Calligraphy, and sometimes Chinese painting.

*Certificates are awarded upon successful completion of all courses.

Short Term Chinese Language Courses (not over one semester)
Short term courses are intensive and effective. They are offered at all levels except for absolute beginners--incoming students should at least know around 800 words for the beginning level. This is to help students adapt more quickly to the teaching style as courses are taught completely in Chinese. Courses focus on all aspects of Mandarin Chinese: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Classes are 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday (typically from 8AM to 12PM). Classes are limited to about 20 people, but typical class size is from 8 to 15 students. Levels are decided based on the results of a placement test taken after arrival in Beijing. Applicants for short term courses should be between 18 and 60 years of age and have completed a high school education or the equivalent. For exceptions, please email admissions@accessmandarin.com.
